Who is she?
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an American politician and the youngest woman to serve in the United States Congress. In 2019, Ocasio-Cortez became the U.S. Representative for New York’s 14th congressional district. She was 29-years-old when she took office. Her success during the 2018 midterm elections garnered national recognition. Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest member of the 116th Congress. Prior to her bid for Congress in 2018, she attended Boston University. Ocasio-Cortez double-majored in international relations and economics. She was later an activist who worked as a waitress and bartender.

What does she do?
Ocasio-Cortez was born into a Catholic family in the New York City borough of the Bronx. She grew up with her parents and her younger brother, Gabriel. Once she started attending Boston University, Ocasio-Cortez interned for Sen. Ted Kennedy. She worked in his foreign affairs and immigration office from early 2008 until his death the following year. Ocasio-Cortez helped many families navigate the system when they were looking for loved ones taken off the street by ICE.

She graduated from college in 2011. Ocasio-Cortez later launched a now-defunct publishing firm, Brook Avenue Press. She created the firm to provide an outlet for books that positively depicted the Bronx. Her other social involvement prior to Congress included working for the nonprofit organization National Hispanic Institute.

During her tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, Ocasio-Cortez has focused on specific issues. She introduced her first piece of legislation to the House on Feb. 7, 2019. Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts presented the Green New Deal. The legislative plan was introduced in an effort to shift to 100% renewable energy sources. It also calls for zero-emission and the creation of millions of high-wage jobs in an effort to eliminate poverty.

Why watch?
Ocasio-Cortez quickly became one of the most talked-about politicians in the Democratic party. She was among freshmen members of Congress targeted by former President Donald Trump. She made history when she was elected at age 29 to Congress, but she asserts that she will continue to propose ways to improve the United States.
