Saint Mary’s College has established it first direct student exchange program in Western
Australia. Eligible students pay tuition and fees at Saint Mary’s and receive their pre-determined financial aid. However, these students directly enroll as full-time (15 credit hours) students in courses that will count toward their degree requirements at Saint Mary’s. Students choose from a wide range of pre-approved courses with the approval of their Saint Mary's College academic advisors. The minimum GPA requirement is 3.0. All students are required to enroll in a course titled Australian History and Society which includes a one-week field trip to the Kimberly region in northwestern Australia to experience life in an Aboriginal community and the “outback.”
Students who are chosen for this study-abroad, semester-long experience live in residence with other study-abroad students from other American universities as well as international students from a number of countries. The historic port city of Fremantle is the home of the main campus and offers a wide array of cafes, restraints, cultural richness and beaches that are all within walking distance. The trip to Broome offers students a unique opportunity to study in an environment that features some of the world’s most beautiful and dramatic scenery in a tropical climate. The town of Broome is populated by a rich mix of cultures including Australia’s indigineous people as well as people of European, Malaysian, Chinese, and Japanese heritage.
